RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to identify immersion use in hot water to relieve pain in newborns. METHODS: an integrative literature review, carried out in the PubMed, VHL, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane and SciELO databases, with investigations in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese, published between 2002 and 2022. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) were used to answer the following question: what are the uses of hot water immersion in relieving pain in newborns? RESULTS: nine studies were included, mainly Brazilian, experimental, with a predominance of strong and moderate levels of evidence. Hydrotherapy and bath use (immersion and bandaging) was observed, promising interventions in reducing pain scores, assessed using scales, physiological and endocrine parameters. CONCLUSIONS: hot water proved to be a promising non-pharmacological intervention in relieving pain in infants in different contexts.

Visual guided motor imagery (MI) is commonly used in stroke rehabilitation, eliciting event-related desynchronization (ERD) in EEG. Previous studies found that immersion level and visuo-tactile stimulation could modulate ERD during visual guided MI, and both of two factors could also improve sense of ownership (SOO) over target limb (or body). Additionally, the relationship was also reported between the performance of MI and SOO. This study aims to investigate whether immersion and visuo-tactile stimulation affect visual guided MI through the SOO over virtual body in stroke patients. Nineteen stroke patients were recruited. The experiment included two phases (i.e., SOO induction and visual guided MI with SOO) that was manipulated across four conditions in a within-subject design: 2×2 , i.e., immersion (VR, 2D monitor display) × multisensory stimulation (visuo-tactile stimulation, observation without tactile stimulation). Results found peaks ERD amplitude during MI were significantly higher in stronger SOO conditions than weaker SOO conditions. Interestingly, the ERD during visual guided MI under the condition of vision only in VR and visuo-tactile stimulation in 2D monitor are similar, which indicates that SOO may be an important factor behind this phenomenon (due to the similar SOO between these two conditions). A moderate correlation was also found between SOO scores and peaks ERD amplitude during MI. This study discussed the possible factor underlying the effects of immersion and multisensory stimulation on visual guided MI in post-stroke patients, identifying the effect of SOO in this process, and could be referred in future studies for coming up with better MI paradigms for stroke rehabilitation.

Little research has taken place on the effect of euthanasia methods on biophysical and biochemical changes at the time of euthanasia in fish. These changes are used in multiple species to determine stress levels before death. Koi (Cyprinus carpio) are an important fish species often used in laboratory research, kept in backyard ponds, and managed in zoological and aquarium collections. The current study evaluated euthanasia of koi by immersion in 0.5 g/L tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) (n = 10), 0.5 g/L clove oil (n = 8), 1 g/L clove oil (n = 10), and CO2 (n = 7) on time to cessation of opercular movement, plasma lactate levels, and plasma cortisol levels. CO2 had the longest mean time to cessation of opercular movement, and MS-222 had the shortest (mean CO2: 24.9 min, range 13.18-31.35 min; MS-222: 2.68 min, range 1.33-4.5 min). The difference was not significant between any of the groups for plasma cortisol or lactate levels. MS-222 demonstrated the highest cortisol levels, and CO2 had the lowest (mean CO2: 108.7 ng/ml, range 33.9-195.8 ng/ml; MS-222: 650.6 ng/ml, range 77.3-2374.9 ng/ml). Average lactate levels were highest for 1 g/L clove oil and lowest for 0.5 g/L clove oil (mean 0.5 g/L clove oil: 5.1 mmol/L, range 1.8-8.1 mmol/L; 1 g/L clove oil: 7.4 mmol/L, range 5.6-10.5 mmol/L).

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, is the most cultivated fish species in the world, due to its low cost, high growth rate, environmental adaptability, and resistance to disease and stress. Anesthetics for fish become necessary in management because they minimize mortality during transport and maintenance of ponds, one of the most used anesthetics is clove oil, which has eugenol as the major substance, representing 90-95 % of clove oil. The present study evaluates the effect of eugenol on cardiac activity in Oreochromis niloticus specimens and relates it to behavioral data to determine a concentration window for safe anesthesia. For the comportamental analysis, was used five treatments (50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 µL·L-1) were evaluated and for the eletrocardiographic test was used seven groups (Control, Vehicle, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 µL·L-1), n = 9/treatment, totaling 108 animals. Behavioral and electrocardiographic tests were performed on all treatments during induction and recovery. The results of the behavioral tests demonstrated the reversibility of the effects with recovery of the posture reflex, varying according to the concentration. The ECG results showed a slow recovery because, at concentrations above 100 µL·L-1, there was no full reversibility of the cardiac effects in the observed experiment time, which could cause greater changes in the tilapia hemodynamics, which led us to identify a window for safe anesthesia. Eugenol is an effective anesthetic in Nile tilapia juveniles when used in concentrations ranging from 50 to 100 µL·L-1, if there is a need for anesthetic deepening, doses above 100 µL·L-1, however, the animals must be monitored due to hemodynamic changes.

RESUMEN

Agaves are cultivated in Mexico as a source of industrial products such as fibers, nutritional supplements, and alcoholic beverages. Due to the demand for plant material, its long-life cycle, and the need to avoid predation on its natural populations, in vitro micropropagation represents a good option for agaves. Plant tissue culture has been successfully used to micropropagate selected elite individuals from plants of various Agave species of economic interest. However, it is necessary to implement systems that lower production costs without losing the quality of the plantlets obtained. This chapter describes the BioMINT™ bioreactor as an alternative for the micropropagation of agaves in the different stages of the micropropagation process.

RESUMEN

Salvia is a very valuable medicinal plant for the pharmaceutical industry. Tissue culture techniques can be used to increase the number of plants in a shorter time. Although protocols for in vitro propagation of more than 15 plant species have been developed, they are not yet efficient enough to increase mass propagation of plants. Therefore, the use of temporary immersion systems is necessary to increase the morphological quality of plants as well as their biomass in several Salvia species. In this chapter, progress in in vitro propagation in several Salvia species using liquid medium and automation is described.

To better understand the fate and assess the ingestible fraction of microplastics (by aquatic organisms), it is essential to quantify and characterize of their released from larger items under environmental realistic conditions. However, the current information on the fragmentation and size-based characteristics of released microplastics, for example from bio-based thermoplastics, is largely unknown. The goal of our work was to assess the fragmentation and release of microplastics, under ultraviolet (UV) radiation and in seawater, from polylactic acid (PLA) items, a bio-based polymer, and from polypropylene (PP) items, a petroleum-based polymer. To do so, we exposed pristine items of PLA and PP, immersed in filtered natural seawater, to accelerated UV radiation for 57 and 76 days, simulating 18 and 24 months of mean natural solar irradiance in Europe. Our results indicated that 76-day UV radiation induced the fragmentation of parent plastic items and the microplastics (50 - 5000 µm) formation from both PP and PLA items. The PP samples (48 ± 26 microplastics / cm2) released up to nine times more microplastics than PLA samples (5 ± 2 microplastics / cm2) after a 76-day UV exposure, implying that the PLA tested items had a lower fragmentation rate than PP. The particles' length of released microplastics was parameterized using a power law exponent (α), to assess their size distribution. The obtained α values were 3.04 ± 0.11 and 2.54 ± 0.06 (-) for 76-day UV weathered PP and PLA, respectively, meaning that PLA microplastics had a larger sized microplastics fraction than PP particles. With respect to their two-dimensional shape, PLA microplastics also had lower width-to-length ratio (0.51 ± 0.17) and greater fiber-shaped fractions (16%) than PP microplastics (0.57 ± 0.17% and 11%, respectively). Overall, the bio-based PLA items under study were more resistant to fragmentation and release of microplastics than the petroleum-based PP tested items, and the parameterized characteristics of released microplastics were polymer-dependent. Our work indicates that even though bio-based plastics may have a slower release of fragmented particles under UV radiation compared to conventional polymer types, they still have the potential to act as a source of microplastics in the marine environment, with particles being available to biota within ingestible size fractions, if not removed before major fragmentation processes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the effect of accelerated aging and coffee immersion on the microhardness and gloss of a new computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) hybrid material (Crystal Ultra) to those of contemporary restorative materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 160 specimens (12 × 14 × 1 mm ± 0.05 mm) were obtained from IPS e.max (IPS), VITA Enamic (VE), Crystal Ultra (CU), Lava Ultimate (LU), and CeraSmart (CS) high-translucency CAD/CAM blocks. The Vickers microhardness and gloss of the specimens were determined after thermocycling and coffee immersion. Data analysis was performed using SPSS (α = .05). RESULTS: IPS and CS specimens exhibited the highest (572.66 ± 11.30) and lowest (61.92 ± 3.91) microhardness, respectively. The highest gloss was observed with IPS specimens (3.31 ± 0.32), and LU specimens showed the lowest gloss (2.33 ± 0.06). A significant difference in gloss was observed between the materials at all measurement intervals (P < .01), except at T0 (P = .43). IPS specimens showed no significant changes in either group at any measurement interval. CONCLUSIONS: The microhardness and gloss of the new CU material were comparable to those of the tested contemporary hybrid restorative materials. Glass-ceramic showed superior hardness and gloss compared to hybrid restorative materials. Accelerated aging with thermocycling and staining significantly affected the microhardness and gloss of all tested CAD/CAM materials.

Background and Objectives: Digital ulcers (DUs) are the most common complication in patients with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). They cause pain with hand dysfunction and negatively impact activities of daily and working life. Our study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a combined treatment of manual therapy and ultrasound therapy in SSc patients with ischemic DU (IDU) compared to manual therapy alone. Materials and Methods: We conducted a before-and-after study (non-randomized study). We enrolled a consecutive series of IDU patients undergoing rehabilitation treatment and divided them into two groups: a treatment group consisting of patients undergoing a combination of manual therapy and US water immersion and a standard care group consisting of patients subjected to manual therapy alone. At the time of the first visit (T0) and at the end of the 4-week rehabilitation period (T1), we evaluated functional capacity, pain intensity, ulcer evolution, and quality of life. Results: In the treatment group, we observed a statistically significant improvement in the functional capacity of the hand (DHI: 28.15 ± 11.0 vs. 19.05 ± 8.83; p < 0.05), pain (NRS: 5.55 ± 1.2 vs. 2.9 ± 1.09; p < 0.05), and PSST score (24.4 ± 4.0 vs. 16.2 ± 2.36; p < 0.05). In the standard care group, we observed a statistically significant improvement only for the functional capacity of the hand (DHI: 28.85 ± 9.72 vs. 22.7 ± 7.68; p < 0.05). Finally, from the comparison between the treatment group and the standard care group, we observed statistically significant improvements in pain (2.9 ± 1.09 vs. 4.5 ± 1.07; p < 0.05) and in the PSST scale (16.2 ± 2.36 vs. 20.4 ± 4.02; p < 0.05). Furthermore, at the end of treatment in the treatment group, 15 ulcers (62.5%) were completely healed, while in the standard care group, only 3 ulcers were completely healed (14.3%). Conclusions: Combined treatment with manual therapy and ultrasound therapy appears to be useful in the management of IDU in patients with scleroderma.

BACKGROUND: Resin composite restorations are highly esthetic restorations, which should have and maintain high surface polish. However, esthetic restorations are subjected to different beverages at variable temperatures, which may affect their surface roughness. This study aimed to evaluate the surface roughness of single-shade (Omnichroma) and multi-shade (Filtek Z350XT) composite materials, following aging by immersion and thermocycling in different beverages, simulating one year of clinical service. METHODS: Thirty specimens of each material were prepared and divided into 6 subgroups (n = 5). In each material, the grouping of the specimens was as follows: the first subgroup was the as-prepared specimens stored dry without immersion or thermocycling. The second, third, and fourth subgroups were immersed in saliva, tea, and red wine, respectively, for 12 days at 37 °C. The fifth and sixth subgroups were thermocycled for 10,000 cycles, in tea (the fifth between 37 and 57 °C) and in red wine (the sixth between 37 °C and12°C). The resultant surface roughness was measured by two different methods, stylus profilometer and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Intergroup comparison was performed using independent t test, while intragroup comparison was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post-hoc test. RESULTS: Intergroup comparison between both composites showed no statistically significant differences in all groups using the stylus profilometer roughness measurements (P>0.05), while the AFM measurements showed significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) within all storage media except the as-prepared control (P = 0.0645), where nanofilled Filtek Z350 XT showed lower nano-roughness. Intragroup comparison data were variable, depending on the material, aging conditions, and roughness assessment tool. However, the resultant average surface roughness (Ra) values in all groups did not exceed the threshold value of Ra 0.2 µm. CONCLUSIONS: Both resin composites attained and retained a clinically acceptable surface finish after immersion and thermocycling in different beverages.

This in vitro study investigated color stability of two photo-polymerized nano-filled and nano-hybrid composite resins in different polymerization modes immersed in different staining solutions before and after brushing. Disc-shaped specimens (n = 120) were prepared from two composite resins based on filler particle size: nano-filled (Filtek Z350, shade A1, 3M ESPE) and nano-hybrid (Spectra ST-HV, shade A1, Dentsply Sirona) composite resins (n = 60 per composite type). Specimens of each resin type were photopolymerized using the following polymerization modes: LED conventional, ramp, and pulse (n = 20 specimens per resin type and LED mode). After preparation, baseline color of the specimens was evaluated using a spectrophotometer (Easyshade V, VITA), and color change was evaluated using the CIE L*a*b* formula. Specimens were soaked in distilled water for 4 weeks in separate containers. The specimens from each polymerization-mode group were separated into two groups of 10 specimens; one group was stored in tea and the other group was stored in cola, each 1 hour daily for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the color was measured again. The specimens were brushed for 2 minutes under 200-g weight using an electronically powered toothbrush on the polymerized side of the specimen. The color was reevaluated immediately after brushing. Color-difference data (ΔE) between groups were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance for main comparison and by independent t test for color change after brushing. Nano-filled composite resin was more color-stable than nano-hybrid composite resin (P < .001), regardless of the staining media. For both composite resin types, the conventional polymerization method produced a more color-stable result (P < .0001). ΔE after brushing was reduced significantly (P < .0001). Both staining solutions have significant effects on color change, with tea staining more than cola (P < .0001). Nanofilled composite resin had greater color stability than nano-hybrid composite resin after immersion in staining solutions. BACKGROUND: The increasing demand for childbirth care based on physiological principles has led official bodies to encourage health centers to provide evidence-based care aimed at promoting women's participation in informed decision-making and avoiding excessive medical intervention during childbirth. One of the goals is to reduce pain and find alternative measures to epidural anesthesia to enhance women's autonomy and well-being during childbirth. Currently, water immersion is used as a non-pharmacological method for pain relief. This review aimed to identify and synthesize evidence on women's and midwives' experiences, values, and preferences regarding water immersion during childbirth. METHODS: A systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative evidence were conducted. Databases were searched and references were checked according to specific criteria. Studies that used qualitative data collection and analysis methods to examine the opinions of women or midwives in the hospital setting were included. Non-qualitative studies, mixed-methods studies that did not separately report qualitative results, and studies in languages other than English or Spanish were excluded. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program Qualitative Research Checklist was used to assess study quality, and results were synthesized using thematic synthesis. RESULTS: Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The qualitative studies yielded three key themes: 1) reasons identified by women and midwives for choosing a water birth, 2) benefits experienced in water births, and 3) barriers and facilitators of water immersion during childbirth. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence from qualitative studies indicates that women report benefits associated with water birth. From the perspective of midwives, ensuring safe water births requires adequate resources, midwives training, and rigorous standardized protocols to ensure that all pregnant women can safely opt for water immersion during childbirth with satisfactory results.

The present work focuses on in vitro cultures of Ruta montana L. in temporary immersion PlantformTM bioreactors. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of cultivation time (5 and 6 weeks) and different concentrations (0.1-1.0 mg/L) of plant growth and development regulators (NAA and BAP) on the increase in biomass and the accumulation of secondary metabolites. Consequently, the antioxidant, antibacterial, and antibiofilm potentials of methanol extracts obtained from the in vitro-cultured biomass of R. montana were evaluated. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis was performed to characterize furanocoumarins, furoquinoline alkaloids, phenolic acids, and catechins. The major secondary metabolites in R. montana cultures were coumarins (maximum total content of 1824.3 mg/100 g DM), and the dominant compounds among them were xanthotoxin and bergapten. The maximum content of alkaloids was 561.7 mg/100 g DM. Concerning the antioxidant activity, the extract obtained from the biomass grown on the 0.1/0.1 LS medium variant, with an IC50 0.90 ± 0.03 mg/mL, showed the best chelating ability among the extracts, while the 0.1/0.1 and 0.5/1.0 LS media variants showed the best antibacterial (MIC range 125-500 µg/mL) and antibiofilm activity against resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains.

Parboiling is gaining increasing attention as it can enhance the head rice yield (HRY) and nutritional quality of non-pigmented rice. The traditional parboiling process with high-temperature immersion requires a long immersion period and results in hard texture of cooked parboiled black rice (PBR), which may be addressed by ultrasound-assisted immersion. In this study, we evaluated the effect of power, time and temperature of ultrasonic immersion on the HRY, texture profile and nutritional quality of PBR. Proper ultrasound-assisted immersion could increase the HRY by about 20% and the GABA content by up to 133%, as well as reduce the arsenic and cadmium content by up to 61% and 79% relative to untreated black rice (UBR), respectively. Moreover, it could increase the content of essential minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc to some extent, and free and bound polyphenols, despite of a certain loss of anthocyanins. It could also improve the palatability of cooked rice. Furthermore, response surface experiments based on the Box-Behnken design were performed to obtain and validate the optimal conditions of ultrasound-assisted immersion (540 W, 45 min, 57 °C). On this basis, morphological changes might be one reason for the improved HRY, nutrition and texture of PBR compared with those of UBR, namely the disappearance of cracks near the aleurone layer and formation of new cracks in the interior of rice.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the demands for restorations have increased considerably; thus, improvements and modifications have been made in dental composite technologies especially using materials that have been claimed to improve color stability. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effect of various solutions on the color stability of different restorative materials in vitro study. METHODS: This study used three types of esthetic restorative materials. The samples comprised 45 discs, including 15 micro-hybrids, 15 nano-hybrids, and 15 glass ionomers). These discs were immersed in various beverages an hour a day for one month at room temperature. The color stability was measured using a spectrophotometer before/after immersion (days 7 and 30). RESULTS: We realized a significant difference in color change with Coca-Cola and tea-milk solution after seven days and 30 days (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was found in the samples immersed in DM after seven days and 30 days (p > 0.05). The highest value of lightness (∆L) and stainability (∆a) was seen in micro-hybrid after 30 days of immersion in tea-milk solution (- 12.16 ± 1.74 and 11.4 ± 3.82, respectively), while most samples had a positive ∆b value. CONCLUSION: After one month, the tea-milk solution affected the color stability of all used restorative materials. In addition, micro-hybrid had higher color stability than nano-hybrid and glass ionomer.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the discoloration of fiber-reinforced composite resin (FRC) disc materials. The color differences (ΔEs) of three CAD/CAM disc materials, FRC with different fiber orientations, composite resin, and polyether-ether-ketones were evaluated after month-long immersion in water, coffee, and curry. The ΔEs of all materials after coffee and curry immersion increased with increasing immersion periods, while those after water immersion barely increased. FRC exhibited a smaller color difference and water sorption value than composite resin and a greater color difference and water sorption value than polyether-ether-ketones. The ΔEs after coffee immersion were significantly correlated with the water sorption value. The ΔE of FRC with fiber orientations perpendicular to the surface was greater than that of FRC with fiber orientations parallel to the surface, likely due to greater exposure of the matrix-fiber interface. This result suggested that the fiber orientations of FRC affected the discoloration.

Human physiological reactions to the environment are coordinated by the interactions between brain and viscera. In particular, the brain, heart, and gastrointestinal tract coordinate with each other to provide physiological equilibrium by involving the central, autonomic, and enteric nervous systems. Recent studies have demonstrated an electrophysiological coupling between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain (gut-brain axis) under resting-state conditions. As the gut-brain axis plays a key role in individual stress regulation, we aimed to examine modulation of gut-brain coupling through the use of an overwhelming and a relaxing module as a first step toward modeling of the underlying mechanisms. This study was performed in 12 participants who, under a virtual reality environment, performed a 9-min cognitive stressful task followed by a 9-min period of relaxation. Brain activity was captured by electroencephalography, autonomic activities by photoplethysmography, and electrodermal and gastric activities by electrogastrography. Results showed that compared with the stressful task, relaxation induced a significant decrease in both tonic and phasic sympathetic activity, with an increase in brain alpha power and a decrease in delta power. The intensity of gut-brain coupling, as assessed by the modulation index of the phase-amplitude coupling between the normogastric slow waves and the brain alpha waves, decreased under the relaxation relative to the stress condition. These results highlight the modulatory effect of biofeedback relaxation on gut-brain coupling and suggest noninvasive multilevel electrophysiology as a promising way to investigate the mechanisms underlying gut-brain coupling in physiological and pathological situations.

To mitigate the effects of heat during operations in hot environments, military personnel will likely benefit from heat acclimation (HA) conducted prior to deployment. Using post-exercise, passive heating, 25 participants completed a 5 d HA regime in sauna (70 °C, 18% RH) or hot-water immersion (HWI) (40 °C) for ≤40 min, preceded and followed by a heat stress test (1-h walking at 5 km.h-1 in 33 °C, 77% RH in military uniform (20 kg) before an incremental ramp to exhaustion). Fifteen completed both regimes in a randomised, cross-over manner. While performance did not significantly improve (+14%, [-1, 29], p = .079), beneficial adaptations were observed for mean exercising core temperature (-0.2 °C, [-0.2, -0.2], p <.001), skin temperature (-0.2 °C, [-0.2, -0.2], p = 035) and heart rate (-8 bpm, [-6, -10], p<.001) in both conditions. Post-exercise, passive HA of either modality may benefit military units operating in the heat.Practitioner summary: Strategies are required to prevent health and performance impairments during military operations upon arrival in hot environments. Using a randomised, cross-over design, participants completed five-day passive, post-exercise heat acclimation using sauna or hot-water immersion. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three oral hygiene tools, a regular toothbrush, an electronic toothbrush, and mouthwash, on the color stability of three different computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufactured (CAM) ceramic blocks. Feldspathic ceramic (Vita Triluxe Forte), hybrid resin ceramic (Vita Enamic), and lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD) were used in this study. A CAD/CAM system and 81 (27 of each material) samples of ceramic blocks were used. All samples were immersed in black coffee for 15 days, and the coffee was changed twice per day. Using a spectrophotometer probe, samples on a grey background were scanned, and physical properties like surface hardness and depth were measured using interferometry and a 3D non-contact surface metrology. After 30 days of application of oral hygiene tools, instruments were used to measure various physical, mechanical, and optical properties. Vita Triluxe had the highest average color variation values (ΔE00) after 15 and 30 days of immersion in coffee in both regular and electronic toothbrushes. Moreover, IPS e.max CAD had the least ΔE00 values with no significant differences among the groups. The surface roughness (Ra) of the Vita Enamic ceramic increased when using a regular toothbrush, and the surface height (Rz) for the Vita Enamic ceramic increased when an electronic toothbrush was used. IPS e.max CAD had the greatest modules of elasticity forces, and Vita Triluxe Forte had the lowest when used with a regular toothbrush. The ΔE00 values of the tested materials were minimally increased or decreased after 30 days of cleaning, and all were clinically acceptable. Ra and Rz were the highest for Vita Enamic in comparison to the other groups. The highest percentage in IPS e.max CAD was associated with a type 1 fracture, whereas type 3 was predominantly observed with Vita Enamic, and type 2 in the Vita Triluxe group without significant differences.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effect of surface type (glazed or polished) with coffee immersion and aging on surface topography (Ra), optical properties (TP, OP), and mechanical properties (fracture forces and modes) of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (Vita Suprinity), hybrid polymer-infiltrated-feldspathic ceramic network material (Vita Enamic), and leucite-containing feldspathic glass (Vitablocs® Mark II) made by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) ceramic materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-four specimens were assembled out of the above 3 CAD/CAMs ceramic materials. Each group was divided into glazed or polished surfaces, having 9 specimens of every type and stained in coffee for 15 days. Ra and color of specimens in the form of TP and OP were recorded before and after immersion in staining material. Fracture forces and modes were analyzed after the 90-day aging. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, then post hoc analysis and Bonferroni tests. RESULTS Our study found significant differences in Ra, TP, and Op before and after coffee immersion between glazed and polished specimens, with higher values in the polished surfaces among the 3 ceramic materials. The highest values of fracture resistance were noted in Vita Suprinity, and Vita Enamic had the lowest values, without significant differences among groups. CONCLUSIONS Most of the TP and OP values were in acceptable clinical range, and Vita Suprinity had superior TP than the other groups. Reparable fracture types were observed in Vita Suprinity, whereas semi-reparable and non-reparable were predominant in other groups.
